How to scan a QR code - a simple guide for iPhone and Android
A QR code opens a page in a second, as long as you know where to tap. A short step-by-step guide for iPhone and Android - plus when an NFC tap is the easier option.

QR codes are everywhere - on business cards, posters, restaurant tables and product labels. And yet many people still aren't sure how to scan one properly. The good news: on a modern phone you don't need any extra app.
On iPhone
- Open the standard Camera app.
- Point the lens at the QR code - you don't need to take a photo.
- Wait a second for a yellow banner with the link to appear at the top.
- Tap the notification to open the page.
On Android
- Launch the Camera app (on most phones it detects codes automatically).
- If nothing happens, use Google Lens or the scan option in Quick Settings.
- Point the camera at the code and tap the link that appears.
When the code won't work
- Wipe the lens - a dirty camera is the most common culprit.
- Get some light and hold the phone steady, about 15–30 cm away.
- Fit the whole code in the frame, without cutting off the corners.
A QR code is the universal plan B: it works on any phone with a camera, with no install and no account.
What if you didn't have to aim?
