Every few years the NFC Forum publishes a roadmap that sets the direction for the whole industry - and, along the way, for every card that works "on tap". The 2026 edition is unusually concrete. Apple, Google, Huawei, NXP, Infineon and Sony all worked on the standards together, so these aren't loose ideas but a preview of what will soon be in phones and cards.

Six directions worth knowing

Faster - up to an eightfold increase in standard transfer speed, meaning content opens more smoothly after a tap.
One tap, many functions - a reader will be able to request exactly the data a given action needs.
Next-generation security - the first security profile for NFC controllers, protection against relay attacks and preparation for the quantum-computing era.
Wireless charging - device-specific profiles and higher power.
Digital keys - access to cars, rooms and services.
Reader consistency - end-to-end testing so a tap works the same everywhere.

What it means for the digital business card

Each of these points translates into the experience of a client bringing their phone to your card. Faster transfer means a profile that opens instantly. "One tap, many functions" means a card that can save a contact one moment, lead to a payment the next, and check a guest in after that - with no mode-switching.
